Friday’s royal barge procession gives Bangkok a reason to stop at the river. By Saturday the decision is different: spend the morning hunting for ceramics, or head west for lunch beside a canal? This guide to Bangkok on 6–8 November follows the weekend’s actual timetable, from the first barges leaving Wasukri Pier to Sunday’s longer Muay Thai card. Pick one fixed event, then fill the hours around it close to where you will be.

1. Watch the royal barges from the riverbank

On Friday the sight to wait for is a line of oars moving together on the Chao Phraya. The royal procession travels from Wasukri Pier to Wat Arun for the Kathin robe offering. Pick a bank before you set out: Santichaiprakarn Park is one designated viewpoint, and the area under Rama VIII Bridge is another, on the Thonburi side.

This is the ceremony itself. The departure time refers to the pier; the barges will pass each viewpoint later.

  • When: Friday 6 November; scheduled departure from 15:00.
  • Where: Chao Phraya, between Wasukri Pier and Wat Arun.
  • Getting there: Use the Tourist Police list of viewing areas and follow the access signs on arrival.
  • Budget: Check access arrangements for your chosen viewpoint; do not count on a reserved seat.

2. Look for ceramics and prints at Chatuchak

Give yourself a small shopping brief: find one piece of porcelain or a print you would actually hang. Start in the art and antiques zone and note the stall number before moving on. Two adjacent aisles can look remarkably similar on the way back. If you are buying something breakable, do it at the end of the trip rather than carrying it around the market.

Saturday and Sunday bring the full weekend market; Friday has a different mix of traders.

  • When: Saturday 7 or Sunday 8 November, 09:00–18:00.
  • Where: Chatuchak, north Bangkok.
  • Getting there: Take MRT Kamphaeng Phet, exit 2. Choose a meeting point before splitting up.
  • Budget: Browsing is free; prices depend on the piece.

3. Spend a slow morning with Thai art at MOCA

Choose a gallery at the Museum of Contemporary Art and look for how different artists handle a face, a figure or a religious detail. A short visit with a question in mind works better here than racing from room to room. The masks in our archive photograph give a sense of the museum’s collection; ask the desk which galleries are open on the day.

All three days fall within the museum’s Tuesday-to-Sunday opening week. Friday is a way to visit before the weekend market trip.

  • When: Friday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00.
  • Where: Lat Yao, Chatuchak.
  • Getting there: Use the main museum address, 499 Kamphaeng Phet 6 Road. Accessible doors and lifts are available.
  • Budget: Check the museum for the current admission price.

4. Choose your Muay Thai night by the fight card

At Rajadamnern, the interesting choice this weekend is the format. Friday and Saturday each list seven three-round bouts. Sunday offers nine, including longer five-round contests. If you want time to follow how a fighter changes tactics across rounds, Sunday is the more useful date. Look at the seating plan before booking: a higher viewpoint lets you see both fighters’ footwork.

The stadium has published separate cards for all three nights, and Sunday’s doors open an hour earlier.

  • When: 6–7 November: gates 18:00. Sunday 8 November: gates 17:00.
  • Where: Rajadamnern Stadium, Ratchadamnoen Nok Road.
  • Getting there: Select the date on the stadium’s own ticket page. Gate times are not first-bout times.
  • Budget: Ticket prices vary by section; check your chosen night before paying.

5. Book a barber’s chair on Yen Akat

If a haircut is already on your list, leave time for a conversation before the scissors come out. At CAVERNES, a reference photo can help explain how much length you want to keep on top or how short you wear the sides. Tell the barber how you normally style your hair, especially if you want a cut you can manage without a dryer.

An appointment gives a southern Bangkok day a clear starting point. Check the booking menu before making the trip.

  • When: Friday through Sunday; venue open 10:00–20:00.
  • Where: Yen Akat, Yan Nawa.
  • Getting there: Use 15/1 Thanon Yen Akat as your destination and reserve an available time.
  • Budget: The haircut service is listed at 800 THB.

6. Build a canal-side lunch at Khlong Lat Mayom

At Khlong Lat Mayom, start with the food stalls on land. Take a look at what is being cooked before committing to lunch; with two people, there is room to share a savoury dish and go back for a Thai sweet. Bring a little cash and ask for the portion price when you order. The market makes a worthwhile outing even if you have no plans to take a boat.

The weekend opening days make this the better choice for Saturday or Sunday lunch. Allow for the trip back from the west bank.

  • When: Saturday and Sunday, 08:00–17:00.
  • Where: Bang Ramat, Taling Chan.
  • Getting there: Set your map to Khlong Lat Mayom on Bang Ramat Road; keep the return address handy.
  • Budget: Food is priced stall by stall. Transport is a separate cost.

7. Hear BABYMONSTER at IMPACT Arena

Both Bangkok dates of BABYMONSTER’s CHOOM tour start at the same time. Choose the night around your journey home, then check the seat category through the ticket link on the artist’s tour page. Several other shows and exhibitions use the IMPACT complex this weekend. Save a map pin for the Arena itself: the Challenger halls and Thunder Dome are different destinations.

The two shows are on consecutive nights. The venue calendar lists a range of prices, but a listed price does not guarantee a seat.

  • When: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November at 18:00.
  • Where: Muang Thong Thani, Nonthaburi.
  • Getting there: Leave time for the trip north, entry checks and the walk to your section.
  • Budget: Listed tiers run from 2,800 THB to 7,300 THB for VIP; check availability for each date.

8. Follow the wetland paths at Benjakitti

Start at ground level, where the planting breaks the water into small channels, then take an elevated path to see how the pieces fit together. The buildings beyond the trees make a useful photographic contrast. You do not need to complete the full nature walk to enjoy the change of perspective; choose a short loop and leave time to stop.

This is a flexible daylight outing between fixed events, especially if you have only an hour in the centre.

  • When: Daily, 04:30–22:00; choose daylight for the wetland views.
  • Where: Khlong Toei, Ratchadaphisek Road.
  • Getting there: Use the park map to find the forest paths and your return gate. Bring water.
  • Budget: A walk needs no equipment hire; allow for transport.

9. Walk the working lanes of Talat Noi

Take the slow route through Talat Noi. Along the Sieng Kong lanes, workshop doorways and stacks of parts tell you as much about the neighbourhood as its murals do. Leave enough space for deliveries and ask before photographing someone at work. If you find a lane especially interesting, walk it again in the other direction; the signs and shopfronts look different on the return.

Saturday or Sunday daylight keeps this walk separate from Friday’s river ceremony. Shop opening times vary.

  • When: Any daylight visit this weekend; the streets are the attraction.
  • Where: Talat Noi, Samphanthawong.
  • Getting there: From MRT Hua Lamphong allow roughly fifteen minutes on foot to reach the neighbourhood.
  • Budget: Public lanes are free to explore; drinks or purchases are optional.

10. Read the city from the Mahanakhon terrace

Start on the indoor deck and find a landmark you already know before going up to the terrace. Look towards Lumphini Park: its open space helps you make sense of the buildings packed around it. The outdoor glass floor is a separate thrill, but the panorama is reason enough to go. For photography, allow a few minutes to walk around and choose a direction before pulling out your phone.

The indoor deck gives you a second option if the weather changes. Check outdoor access and ticket conditions on the day.

  • When: Friday, Saturday or Sunday; choose a timed admission in daylight.
  • Where: King Power Mahanakhon, Silom.
  • Getting there: Arrive via BTS Chong Nonsi and follow signs to the tower ticket counter.
  • Budget: Adult tickets are priced by time slot; compare daytime and late-afternoon rates on the operator’s page.

Plan your Bangkok outing

Keep Friday afternoon for the river if that is what brought you here. For Saturday, Chatuchak and MOCA make a northern pair; for Sunday, an early market lunch leaves room for a fight night. Anyone with an IMPACT ticket should plan the journey to Nonthaburi first and fit the rest of the day around it.
